About Trekosa
Trekosa is a free app that finds dog walks to suit your dog and you. We make it in West Yorkshire, at Trekosa Limited, a small company started by people who walk dogs that need a bit of room.
Why it exists
If your dog is nervous, or reactive, or old, or simply cannot do stiles, the hardest part of a walk is the first step out of the door. You want to know what is on the way before you get there: the road with no pavement, the field with sheep in it, the stile with no dog gate, the park where the council says dogs stay on a lead. That knowledge exists, but it is scattered across councils, the Ordnance Survey, Natural England, the Department for Transport and the people who walked there last week.
We gather it into one answer. Tell us about your dog once, and every walk we show you has been checked against the same public data, with anything that might stop you shown first. Other walkers add what they found, with a date beside it, so what we tell you stays true.
What Trekosa is not
It is not a map with pins on it, and it is not a directory of dog-friendly places. Both exist, and neither can tell you whether this walk, this morning, is one your dog can do. It is not a list of the best walks near you either. A list sends everybody to the same place, which is the fastest way to spoil a good one, so we give each household a short list of its own.
What we will never tell you
- Never that a walk is safeThe ground changes week to week, and nobody can know from a desk what is in a field this morning. We show you what was measured and what people reported, each with a date, and the decision stays yours.
- A top tenNo ranked lists, no best walks near you, ever. You get a short list chosen for your dog, and the next person gets a different one.
- That a place is quietQuiet is a time of day, not something a place is. When we say a walk is quiet we say when, and who told us.
- Nothing, where we know nothingWhere we hold no data for an area, or could not get a council's dog rules, we say so. A blank space looks like good news, and we will not let it.
How it is paid for
It is free while we build it. The first 250 households to walk one route and tell us how it went have Further, the paid part, free for good, and the app tells you when you are one of them. No adverts, nothing that follows you to other sites, and we never sell your data. If a price for anybody else ever arrives, the terms say we tell you first.
Where it works, and what it stands on
We work across every county in England, all of Wales and all of Scotland, and the coverage page shows every area from real boundary data. Every public source behind a walk, and its licence, is named on the sources page.
The company
Trekosa was started by Paul, its founder. He and his wife have three dogs, all very different from one another: Scout and Dylan, both Australian Shepherds, and Mitch, a Border Collie. She likes to walk a route herself before she takes them on it; he would rather find a new one, and needs to know what it is like before he sets off. The app is built for both of them. He writes the notes that come from walking his own dogs. Trekosa Limited, company number 17446018, registered in England and Wales. Write to hello@trekosa.com and a person answers.
